Two races, one outcome

The world is electrifying its power, its cars and its buildings faster than most forecasts allowed for. It is also warming faster than any period in the instrumental record. This site tracks both, country by country, with every figure dated.

The crossover

In 2025, renewables generated more of the world's electricity than coal for the first time in over a century. Wind and solar alone met 99% of the year's growth in demand, which is why fossil generation stayed flat while the world used more power than ever.

Where each country actually is

Global averages hide the only thing that matters, which is that national grids are nowhere near each other. France runs a 94% low-carbon grid and India a 23% one, so the same electric car bought in each country is a different climate decision.

Where the transition actually stands

Three sectors decide whether electrification adds up: the grid that supplies the electricity, the vehicles that switch onto it, and the buildings that are hardest to move. Alongside them, three things that set the terms — who is actually doing the emitting, what the warming already costs, and what is happening today.

The two things on this site that do not wait for an annual release: the carbon intensity of the British grid, which moves every half hour, and the hazards currently at orange or red alert worldwide.
